September is National Suicide Prevention Month. Today we had a speaker, Brooke Hoffman, from the South Dakota branch of NAMI. NAMI is the National Alliance on Mental Illnesses. Ms. Hoffman presented “Ending the Silence” to grades 6-8, 9-10 and 11-12 in separate groups. Ending the Silence is an engaging presentation that helps middle and high school-aged youth learn about the warning signs of mental health conditions and what steps to take if they or a loved one are showing symptoms of a mental health condition.

"Little Chief" time started in the elementary today. Every day, every student in kindergarten through fifth grade is divided into groups according to their skill level, once for reading and once for math. Every student works in a reading group for 30 minutes and a math group for 20 minutes every day gaining skills, whether working on skills that still need to be learned or pushing those that have the skills so they can fly even higher with their abilities. Ms Bruns, Mrs. Stroud, Mrs. Bindert, Mrs. DeJong, Miss Lacey and Mrs. Burma work with the students during Little Chief time as well as the classroom teachers.
